Southern Water has spent £80 million pounds to bring cleaner seas to Kent.

The Southern Water scheme means up to 70 million litres of wastewater can be treated every day at its Weatherlees water treatment works in Ramsgate. Wastewater from Margate and Broadstairs undergoes several additional treatment processes including disinfection by ultra violet light, greatly improving the quality of the water released back to the sea. The wastewater is pumped to the treatment works along an 11km pipeline. Once the water has undergone a thorough treatment process at the site, it is sent back along a second, parallel pipeline out to sea at Foreness Point.
